Bullet-Resistant Windows and Ballistic Glass

UL 752 LEVELS 1, 2, 3 & 8 · CUSTOM BALLISTIC GLAZING

GSS Doors supplies custom bullet-resistant windows and ballistic glazing for residential, commercial and secure-facility applications. Available configurations provide protection for defined handgun threats through higher-level rifle threats, with UL 752 Levels 1, 2, 3 and 8 available depending on project requirements.

Each window is configured around the required protection level, opening size, glazing selection, frame design, anchorage and surrounding construction. Custom sizes and select architectural glazing options are available depending on the final configuration.

Natural Light With Defined Ballistic Protection

Bullet resistant windows and glass door

Bullet-resistant windows help protect vulnerable openings without eliminating natural light or exterior visibility. GSS Doors offers custom ballistic glazing for residences, safe rooms, commercial buildings and other protected spaces, with options for defined handgun or rifle threats.

The appropriate glazing depends on the required ballistic standard, window size, supporting frame, anchorage and surrounding wall construction. The comparison below provides a starting point for selecting the appropriate protection level.

Compare Bullet-Resistant Window Options

Ballistic RatingDefined ThreatApplication Consideration
UL 752 Level 19 mm handgunEntry-level handgun-threat ballistic glazing
UL 752 Level 2.357 Magnum handgunIncreased handgun-threat protection
UL 752 Level 3.44 Magnum handgunHigher handgun-threat protection
UL 752 Level 87.62 × 51 rifleHigher-level rifle protection requiring substantially heavier glazing and supporting construction

Glazing thickness, weight, maximum size, framing requirements and available architectural options vary by the selected ballistic configuration. GSS Doors will identify the appropriate glazing system after reviewing the required protection level and opening conditions.

Additional Testing and Glazing Standards

Product documentation for the applicable glazing configuration should identify compliance with the required architectural and safety-glazing standards. Referenced standards may include:

  • ANSI Z97.1: Safety Glazing Materials Used in Buildings
  • ASTM C1036: Standard Specification for Flat Glass
  • ASTM C1172: Standard Specification for Laminated Architectural Flat Glass
  • ASTM C1349: Standard Specification for Architectural Flat Glass Clad Polycarbonate

Specifications are based on the selected glazing product and may vary with the final configuration. Ballistic performance applies only to the tested glazing configuration and defined threat. Frame design, anchorage, supporting construction and installation requirements must be confirmed for each project.

How Bullet-Resistant Windows Work

The bullet-resistant glazing configurations offered by GSS Doors are laminated assemblies that use multiple layers of glass, polycarbonate and urethane designed to protect against defined ballistic threats.

When the exterior glass layers are struck, they fracture and help spread the impact energy across a larger area. The flexible interlayers hold the assembly together, while the polycarbonate layer on the protected side helps prevent penetration and contain dangerous glass fragments.

Performance is limited to the ammunition, velocity, shot pattern and number of impacts covered by the applicable test rating. Glazing thickness alone does not determine protection. The correct product, installation orientation, frame, edge support and anchorage must all be coordinated for the specified system.

Custom Bullet-Resistant Glass

Bullet-resistant glass can be manufactured for fixed windows, interior openings, door lites, sidelights and transoms. This allows ballistic protection to be incorporated into different parts of residential, commercial or secure-facility projects while preserving visibility and natural light.

Depending on the selected glazing configuration, available architectural options may include gray, bronze, green or blue tints, reflective glass, privacy treatments, frosted interlayers, Low-E coatings and insulated glass configurations. Availability varies by ballistic rating, glass thickness, size and selected configuration.

GSS Doors can provide ballistic glazing for a prepared opening or help coordinate a complete framed window assembly. The glazing carries its specified ballistic rating, but protection at the complete opening also depends on proper framing, edge support, anchorage, surrounding construction and installation. These components must be coordinated for the selected protection level.

More Than Ballistic Glass

Selecting the correct ballistic glass is only part of designing a protected opening. GSS Doors can help coordinate the glazing with the window frame, anchorage, surrounding wall construction and architectural requirements so the components work together as a complete window system.

Plan Your Bullet-Resistant Window Project

Selecting the appropriate bullet-resistant window begins with understanding the threat level, opening dimensions and supporting construction. If the required ballistic rating is not yet known, GSS Doors can help compare the available handgun- and rifle-threat glazing options.

To begin, provide the project location, estimated number of windows, approximate dimensions and whether the openings are part of new construction or an existing building. Information about the wall construction, frames, desired finish and privacy or energy-efficiency options will also help define the appropriate system.

Final glazing, frame, anchorage and installation requirements will be confirmed before the order is approved.
